Times they were hard, I would starve every night
Selling my blood for a dollar a pint
I got a job and it was my salvation
Selling those newspapers down at the station
Screaming out headlines, the trains would roll through
Please buy a paper so I can buy shoes
Or maybe a toothbrush for my little kid
I really don't have one but you know if I did
I would buy him a guitar and teach him to play
Tell him those words I've been meaning to say
I would take him for ice cream and show him around
Buy him a puppy, down at the pound
But selling those papers, it wasn't my dream
So I got promoted to sell magazines
And just when I thought I was going insane
A pretty young lady stepped off of the train
Said I'll buy you a flower, sing you a song
Take you away from here, it won't be long
'Till I show you the world things that you've never seen
First have to sell some more magazines
Times they were hard, I would starve every night
Selling my blood for a dollar a pint
I got a job and it was my salvation
Selling those newspapers down at the station
Screaming out headlines, the trains would roll through
Please buy a paper so I can buy shoes
Or maybe a toothbrush for my little kid
I really don't have one but you know if I did
I would buy him a guitar and teach him to play
Tell him those words I've been meaning to say
I would take him for ice cream and show him around
Buy him a puppy, down at the pound
Lyrics: Jaeson Music: Jaeson Jaeson claims to have written this song while drinking the night before the 1996 Blue Planet. We learned it the day of that show and played it that night. It remains a favorite song with audiences. When we recorded the studio version, Steve missed the ending and played an extra few beats. Instead of re-doing the drum take, we left it the way it was and have played it that way live ever since.
